Obituary for Jim Vernooy

Passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 surrounded by his family. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Cora (2007) and daughter Julie (1981). Loving father to Erin (Jason), Mark (Danielle) and Keri (Kevin). Cherished Opa to Shawn, Julie and Eric. Survived by his siblings Nick, John, Corrie, Bill, Betsy and Joe. He was predeceased by his siblings Anne, Teresa, Fr. Paul, Mary and Piet. Jim will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Jim was born in Woodstock, the youngest of 12 children. He graduated from Waterloo as an electrician in 1975. He started working for Ontario Hydro, and would retire from the same company 30yrs later. In that time, he traveled often with his family and was always keen to try a new adventure. When Jim and the family moved to Brooklin, he became an active member of the local Knights of Columbus chapter and often organized various charity events, such as bingos and the dunk tank at Brooklin Spring Fair. After retirement, Jim became more involved in the Woodstock community. He managed multiple social activities, including darts and card games, with other seniors at Southgate Centre.

Jim had a passion for tractors and farming, and he enjoyed working the fields and picking the stones on his nephews farm in the Stratford area. He was always willing to lend a hand, tend the BBQ at family gatherings and never failed to have a ‘Dad joke’ ready to share.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 11am to 4pm at the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington Street North in Woodstock. Guests are required to RSVP online at www.smithleroy.com. Cremation to follow.

A memorial mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Woodstock, when we are able to gather as a large group, to celebrate Jim’s life. Internment will then follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or VON Sakura House would be greatly appreciated.
