Obituary for Mary Hook

HOOK, Mary - October 20 1919 – January 18 2021
Born in Whenby Yorkshire England on October 20 1919, Mary and her parents Sarah and Walter Wright emigrated to Canada landing in Montreal. They made their way briefly to Park Row in Woodstock staying with relatives before moving on to Beachville, Ontario where they made their permanent residence. She had siblings Jack (2008), Marjorie, and Raymond. Mary attended school there and afterwards began working the looms at Firestone Textiles through the war years.
During these years she met her husband Leslie Hook (1983) and were married after the war in 1947. They purchased land and began building their lifelong home on Wellington Lane. At that time it was the middle of a farmer’s field with a dirt road.
After leaving Firestone to start a family their eldest son Lorie was born in 1956 and Douglas in 1959. To help with the family besides raising the children, Mary worked many jobs cleaning homes in the vicinity.
After the passing of her husband Leslie (1983) Mary would take day trips to local attractions, a trip out to the Rockies, and finally a vacation to St. Kitts and Nevis to visit her niece Anne.
She would tend to her flower and vegetable gardens, canning and preserving foods for the winter months. A phenomenal cook, she could compare with any chef.
Always a humble, kind and positive person she would do her best to make certain people were cared for.
Mary leaves behind her sister Marjorie and brother Raymond, sons Lorie and Douglas, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will miss her kind words dearly.
She lived a simple and remarkable life where her outlook was always positive.

A private family graveside service was held on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the Anglican Cemetery, Woodstock. If desired, memorial donations in Mary’s memory can be made to the Woodstock Hospital Foundation or The Inn (local shelter for the homeless). Arrangements have been entrusted to the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. North, Woodstock (519-537-3611). Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy
